IN2 Innovation Project Spotlight
The Mount That Moves With You
A User-First Approach To Reinventing The TV Wall Mount Experience.
SANUS, a Legrand brand, came to IN2 Innovation with a challenge familiar to anyone who has ever wrestled a large TV onto a wall: how do you make the mounting experience less difficult. As televisions have grown larger and heavier, the installation process has only grown more frustrating. Misalignment, excessive force, minimum room for error, and no way to fix mistakes without starting over.
Legrand asked us to rethink the premium TV mount from the ground up, targeting the upscale retail market at Best Buy. The result is the SANUS Advanced Full-Motion 4D® + Shift™, the first TV wall mount on the market to offer vertical adjustment after installation.
Identifying Opportunities: Getting Into the Living Room
The first move was getting close to real users. We built a mock living room in our lab and conducted rapid user research. We facilitated hands-on installation sessions where Legrand executives participated directly alongside consumers, not just observing, but getting their hands on the product and feeling the friction points themselves. This level of client immersion ensured that design decisions were grounded in actual experience, not assumption.
What we found was consistent: existing mounts demand a great deal of precision upfront, required excessive force to adjust, and left users with no recourse when something was off. A slight misalignment meant pulling everything off the wall and starting again, a frustrating and time-consuming outcome that the research made clear was all too common.
Research also confirmed a clear market opportunity. International competitors were winning on price, but not on experience. A premium mount that genuinely solved user pain points and looked the part could command a higher price point and reinforce SANUS’ position as the category leader.
Designing the Solution
Unlike conventional TV mounts that focus mainly on engineering, we led with a design-first philosophy. Form and function had to be in balance from the start.
The Shift™ Feature
The defining innovation is the vertical adjustment system, offering up to 8 inches of post-installation height correction. If a mount goes up slightly too high or too low, users can simply shift it into place without touching the wall again. No re-drilling. No frustration. This was a direct response to the most common complaint we heard: installation errors that were effectively impossible to fix without significant effort.
Effortless Motion
The mount supports TVs from 42 to 90 inches and up to 125 lbs, with full tilt, swivel, and extension capability. We designed the motion system to feel smooth and deliberate. Adjusting a heavy screen should require intention, not a workout. The result is a mount that responds to light effort rather than demanding force, making repositioning for different seating arrangements quick and intuitive.
Error-Tolerant Installation
The installation process was redesigned to be forgiving. A comprehensive guide walks users of any skill level through setup in under 15 minutes, and the mounting system itself accommodates minor dimensional variances so that the typical sources of misalignment, uneven studs, and imprecise measuring don’t result in visible problems or wall damage. The goal was to make a successful installation, the expected outcome, not the lucky one.
Traditional mounts have long required significant physical strength and technical know-how, which limits accessibility for many users. By reducing the required force and simplifying every step, this mount makes the installation experience genuinely accessible, expanding its usability for a much broader range of users.
Cable Management & Aesthetic Appeal
An integrated cable management system keeps wires hidden and routed cleanly behind the mount. Combined with a low-profile collapsible design that sits flush against the wall when retracted, the mount disappears into the room rather than competing with the TV. Research demonstrates that organized spaces enhance mental well-being, and a mount that eliminates messy, visible cables contributes to exactly the kind of tidy, intentional living space that homeowners take pride in.
A Product Built To Last
Durability and long-term value were built into the brief. The mount’s compatibility with a wide range of screen sizes means it doesn’t become obsolete when a household upgrades their TV, reducing the need for constant replacement and supporting more responsible consumption. The design approach also reduces material waste by eliminating excessive manufacturing processes, while modular construction and standardized components keep production costs in check without compromising the premium feel.
Form Follows Brand
Every material, color, and finish on the SANUS 4D® + Shift™ was deliberately chosen. The concentric radii form language mirrors Legrand’s broader visual brand vocabulary, creating a cohesive, high-end appearance that ties the mount to the larger product family. Ergonomic touchpoints are positioned intuitively, so the adjustments users make most often are also the easiest to reach and operate.
The mount doesn’t just perform at a premium level; it looks and feels like it belongs there. Smooth lines, refined surfaces, and a slim silhouette make it as much a design object as a functional one, sitting naturally alongside modern television designs. This attention to visual brand language reinforces the product’s position as a top-tier offering and strengthens SANUS’s identity as a leader in high-end entertainment solutions.
Impact: Setting A New Bar For Premium Mounts
The SANUS 4D® + Shift™ launched at Best Buy and achieved best-seller status. Customers praised its simple installation process, innovative design, and high-quality standards, responding to exactly what the research told us they would. Its strategic placement within Best Buy’s premium entertainment solutions offering reinforced both SANUS’ exclusivity and Best Buy’s standing as a destination for high-end home entertainment.
Beyond the product itself, the work shaped Legrand’s broader innovation roadmap. The market insights and positioning data developed during the project gave Legrand a sharper lens for future product development, clarifying where premium features justify premium pricing and how to differentiate against international competition on dimensions that actually matter to consumers.
By partnering with IN2, Legrand now has more than a best-selling mount. They have a proven design methodology and a market positioning framework that they can carry forward as the SANUS line continues to grow.
